Durango
Day 2
Thankfully the damage to my truck was minimal and we were able to continue to enjoy our trip. On the second day of our journey along the famed Million Dollar Highway, we stumbled upon a picturesque farmstead nestled amidst the rugged beauty of the San Juan Mountains near Telluride. The idyllic scene unfolded before us as we marveled at the harmonious blend of nature and human habitation. Rolling fields stretched out towards the horizon, framed by towering peaks that seemed to guard this hidden gem from the outside world. As we continued our drive, the memory of that beautiful farmstead stayed with us, a reminder of the simple joys that can be found when we venture off the beaten path.
We got to spend the day exploring Southern Colorado's serene beauty: majestic mountains, vibrant meadows, winding trails, and untamed wilderness. As we come to the end of day two excitement sets in knowing that tomorrow we will get to go on a train ride through the mountains.
Day 3 Durango to Silverton Train
Savoring each sip of coffee, the tranquil morning moments offer a sense of peace and anticipation for the days adventure. Soon, we will board the train that will carry us through the breathtaking beauty of Animas Canyon. A leisurely trip to yesteryear riding 3 1/2 hours each way on this train while spending a nearly 2-hour layover in the historic mining town of Silverton enjoying the sights, shopping, and food that Silverton offers. This train has been in continuous operation on this 45-mile branch of the original Denver & Rio Grande Railway since 1882. Much of the scenery remains unchanged since those historic days. There’s no cell service or Wi-Fi throughout the Animas Canyon so you’re unplugged from the modern world. Soak in the views, listen as the steam whistle echoes through the canyon, and hear the vintage locomotive work to pull the train up the grades. If you long to unwind and enjoy Colorado nature at its finest, this is the trip for you. Just be warned if you are in an outside car bring sunscreen and sunglasses. Durango to Silverton Train
Independence Pass
Independence Pass part of Colorado State Highway 82, passes over the Continental Divide between Leadville and Aspen, Colorado. The summit at the Continental Divide is 12,095 feet above sea level. It is about 32 miles long and takes anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour-and-a-half with stops along the way to enjoy the scenic views. It twists around stunning groves of aspen trees and hugs the Roaring Fork River. The road is steep, narrow, and twisty with only a few guardrails - if steep cliffs bother you do not take this road. Bring your jacket and enjoy the amazing photo opportunities. Close by you can also find a ghost town between the pass and Aspen. Once a thriving mining town with over 40 businesses and an estimated population of 1,500, today you can view the remains of miner's cabins, the Farewell Stamp Mill, Stables, and the General Store.
